„Poland, Italy and Europe (Interview with envoy Zaleski)“
Zaleski presented the economic situation of Poland, emphasizing the very good condition of the industry rebuilt after the war, "flourishing agriculture" and a positive balance of foreign trade. He also noticed the unsatisfactory financial situation related to the falling value of the Polish currency, which determined the need for fiscal and monetary reform and the introduction of a new gold-based currency. The envoy reviewed Poland's international situation, pointing to normal diplomatic relations with the USSR based on the Treaty of Riga, while emphasizing Moscow's failure to implement some of its provisions. He declared Warsaw's readiness to pacify relations with Germany and resolve disputes peacefully.
Zaleski emphasized Poland’s mutual interests with the Little Entente in guaranteeing post-war peace treaties, allied relations with Romania and friendship with Yugoslavia (hence, as he claimed, Warsaw welcomed Belgrade’s signing of the treaty with Italy), as well as mutual interests with Czechoslovakia, which, in his opinion, would enable the dissipation of the existing misunderstandings between Warsaw and Prague. With regard to Italy, Zaleski emphasised the “great brotherly sympathy” of Poles and the many common interests linking Warsaw and Rome, including economic cooperation. He pointed to the presence of Italian assets and companies such as „Ansaldo“, „Breda“ and „Fiat“ in Poland, which could treat it not only as a place for investment and sales of goods, but also as a transit territory towards the Soviet Union.

Poland and Italy officially established diplomatic relations in the summer of 1919, following the transformation of the Polish National Committee's mission, which had been operating in Rome during World War I, into a legation. Konstanty Skirmunt, the former head of the PNC mission, became the first extraordinary envoy and minister plenipotentiary. He held this position until he took over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland in June 1921. After him, the representative office was headed by the future head of Polish diplomacy, August Zaleski (1922–1926), followed by Stanisław Kozicki (1926), Roman Knoll (1927–1928) and Stefan Przezdziecki (1928–1929); the latter continued his activity as ambassador (1929–1932), and after him this function was held by Alfred Wysocki (1933-1938) and Bolesław Wieniawa-Długoszowski (1938-1940).
During the interwar period, there were 12 consulates of various ranks in Italy, subordinate to the legation/embassy. Consulates general existed in Milan and Rome. There was also a consulate in Trieste and a vice-consulate in Genoa (only in 1919–1920) as well as honorary consulates in Bari, Bologna, Florence, Catania, Naples, Palermo, Turin and Venice.
After Italy declared war on France and Great Britain on June 10, 1940, Wieniawa-Długoszowski left Rome together with the representatives of the Western powers, leading to a severance of relations. They were resumed in early November 1944, following the liberation of the Italian capital by the Allies.
The Polish government-in-exile then appointed Maciej Loret as its representative as chargé d'affaires. At that time, the Consulate General in Rome was also operating. Following Loret, Stanisław Janikowski, previously a counselor at the embassy to the Vatican, became the Polish representative in the same capacity at the beginning of February 1945. His mission was ended when Italy withdrew its recognition of the Polish government-in-exile in London in July 1945.

Resumption of Italian-Polish diplomatic relations"
Following the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Italian and Polish governments on November 10, 1944, the Italian press published a communiqué announcing that Maciej Loret had been appointed chargé d'affaires in Rome on behalf of the Polish government-in-exile. It was emphasized that he was well-known in Italy, having spent many years there, and had a thorough understanding of Italy, which would have an impact on his performance of the duties.
In connection with the establishment of diplomatic relations between the governments of Italy and Poland on 10 November 1944, a statement appeared in the Italian press announcing that Maciej Loret had been appointed chargé d'affaires in Rome on behalf of the Polish government-in-exile. It was emphasised that he was well known in Italy, where he spent many years of his career and had an excellent understanding of Italy, which would undoubtedly influence his performance of his duties.

The Milan consulate was established in 1919, initially as an honorary consulate, then transformed into a vice-consulate. In early 1920, it began operating as a consulate, becoming a consulate general in 1928. It existed until the severance of Polish-Italian relations on June 10, 1940. The first records of the building located at Piazza di Spagna 20 date back to the 16th century. In the second half of the 19th century, it became the property of Ernest Pierret (1824–1898), a goldsmith and jeweller of French origin, who rebuilt it, adding a fourth storey and changing the decor. The building was designed in the neoclassical style and eventually named Palazzo Pierret. Between 1919 and 1924, it housed the Polish legation.

The palace at Via delle Botteghe Oscure 32 was commissioned by the Roman nobleman Alessandro Mattei (?–1580) between 1545 and 1564. In 1776, it was purchased by Francesco Caetani, Duke of Sermoneta and Duke of Teano; it remains in the hands of his descendants to this day.
